Oops....I did it again. I didn't learn!
Irony. Most of the time we miss it. It passes over or around us like water on rocks.
I recently started a professional development group with two great colleagues from my local ATD chapter. We want more hand-on learning - workshops, collaboration, problem based learning. You know - learning events.
We had our second session this past Saturday. Heck, even my new boss came. It was great. It was fun. It also wasn't interactive. WHy? Because of me. Because I can't help myself. I'm a great designer when someone gives me parameters. I'm also a good designer when I can let go of my ego, my fears, and my ingrained "lecture-based know it-all alter-ego". You know - I was lectured at a lot. I was a history & political science major after all. I was also a social studies teacher - history, government, etc. I love to write too.
But I know better. I've been trained better. That's the issue with a PDG. There's so much to learn. And we're also helping a lot of other professionals recover from the death-by-powerpoint phenomenon that still dominates in schools, universities, and especially in corporate learning.
I hope my colleagues & friends can forgive me. I know I'm my own worst critic. But I know better. I just hope to live down the fact that I lived up to the motto "do as I say, not as I do". Third time will hopefully be a charm.
